Am I a candidate for dental implants?
If you have one or more missing or failing teeth, and you are healthy enough to undergo minor dental surgeries, such as tooth extractions, you may be a candidate for dental implants. In some cases, bone loss has occurred in the jaw, making dental implant placement impossible without a bone grafting procedure. Schedule an appointment with a skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon to find out for sure whether or not dental implants are right for you. Your surgeon will be able to form a treatment plan and assess your need for bone grafting or other procedures.
How long is the recovery period for dental implants?
Each patient’s exact recovery time will differ depending on the number of implants they get, the quality of bone left in the jaw, and their body’s regenerative capabilities. But in general, dental implants take between three and six months to heal fully. This healing time is necessary to allow the bone surrounding your new implants to integrate with the implant posts. Three months may seem like a long time, but the three- to six-month estimate is only for full chewing capability. Most patients are back to their normal routines just a few days after the procedure, although a soft foods diet may be necessary for some time.
The vast majority of patients find that a lifetime of healthy-looking, functional teeth is well worth the wait of a few months. Some patients also have their dentist make removable temporary teeth for them to wear while they wait for their implant sites to heal fully so that they don’t have to go without teeth at all.
Will there be pain associated with dental implants?
Once your surgical sites have healed, the dental implants will feel nearly identical to your natural teeth, causing no discomfort whatsoever; however, patients may experience some discomfort the first few days after surgery. Your oral surgeon should provide you with a prescription for pain medication to relieve any discomfort. You will also be given post-operative instructions to make sure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.
