Dr. Steve Huang developed the first annual Wisdom For Wisdom program to give students in our community free wisdom teeth extractions. He created the program in response to the rising cost of college textbooks. Our complimentary extraction procedure gives students a healthier smile by removing painful and often damaging wisdom teeth.
In the past decade, college textbook prices have skyrocketed. Research from the American Enterprise Institute shows that textbook prices have increased over 90%, and as a result, students in our community are struggling to purchase textbooks. This puts their academic success at risk. Our Wisdom For Wisdom program provides students the opportunity to put the funds they would have put toward medical bills toward their textbook costs.
For two weeks from April 17, 2018, to April 30, 2018, we welcomed Wisdom For Wisdom applications from high school and college students. Applicants to the program completed a short quiz after watching an informational video. The educational video was designed to educate students on the wisdom tooth extraction procedure and aftercare. Applicants answered three questions about wisdom teeth to verify they watched the video. Following the quiz, applicants submitted their application explaining what the procedure would mean to them if selected. Each of these sections made the application process fun, educational, and easy. Our 2018 final recipient was selected based on many factors such as the necessity of extraction and financial need.
Wisdom teeth are the last to grow into the mouth and usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth can sometimes cause the growth of harmful bacteria, which can cause decay, gum disease, and infections. Early extraction of the wisdom teeth is recommended before the teeth begin to cause destructive and expensive oral health problems.
On May 1, 2018, the final recipient of the first annual Wisdom For Wisdom program was announced on social media. Sydney B., a high school student at Green Valley High School, was selected for her hard work and commitment to education. On May 23, 2018, she had her initial consultation at our practice. Following her consultation, Sydney had her removal procedure on June 4, 2018. We are truly honored to provide her with this complimentary procedure and to help contribute to her academic success.
Our team at Henderson Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center is dedicated to supporting academic achievement and oral health in our community. We are proud to support our local students by providing this essential program.
